Hello Shareholders,
Last month I asked if I should work at McDonald’s, and with 72% support the shareholders thought this was a good idea. So now I work at McDonald’s.
My schedule is typically from about 7am to 2pm on Friday to Tuesday, with Wednesday and Thursday off. I usually work Drive Thu, which is like being an air traffic controller that resupplies everyone with burgers and nuggets.
I get a free shift meal, 50% off food at my location, and a 30% nation-wide discount. The other perk I was really excited about was the 6% 401K match, but that doesn’t kick in until you’ve been working for a year.
So I thought a good savings plan would be to take 6% of my take home salary and invest in MCD 0.00%↑ stock. But when I mentioned I was doing this to some shareholders they thought this was not a financially sound strategy. So I am putting it up to shareholder vote:
You can decide if I should not invest in McDonald’s, or if I should, at what level I should invest, from 3% all the way to 50%. (Note: because we show the percentage of votes for each choice it looks a little confusing.)
If you’re interested in more about what it’s like to work at a hamburger restaurant you are in luck! We are very close to launching season two of Hamburger Business Review. This year we are covering the news, talking about what the job is like, and looking at a case study from Harvard Business Review. I think we are kicking off the first episode is about a week!
Coming Up Next
I have some more questions about working at the hamburger restaurant. Many of the customers and my co-workers speak Spanish and I wonder if it makes sense to spend my now limited free time and energy on Spanish lessons?
And there is also a noticeable odor from working at a hamburger restaurant all day. I tend to wash my uniform very often and change and shower as soon as I get home, but I’ve noticed that some of my co-workers smell nice and perhaps I should consider a signature scent.
Oh, I’ve also been talking a lot about working at a hamburger restaurant on the daily podcast 3 Minute Review with Kathryn. So if you’re interested in the day to day updates you can listen to that.
I think that is it for now... Working at McDonald’s has made me really aware of my time. When I get home at 2pm I have energy to basically do one thing, and then with whatever other life routines and tasks I find that I am pretty wiped out by 7pm and in bed at around 9:30pm with my alarm set for 5am so I can have a little time to myself in the morning (which is when I’m writing this email).
Profitably Yours,
-K. Mike Merrill
